Wayne Crow

The Crow Family arrived in Calif on July 4, 1939 after following the paths of many thousands of other migrants fleeing the dustbowl of Texas/ Oklahoma. The journey began in 1937 and took the family to northern New Mexico, then to Coolidge, Arizona , where on May 5th, 1938 little Wayne {that’s me} was born in a little dirt floored adobe very close to the now famous ruins of Casa Grande National Park. My older brothers tell me they used to climb over the ruins daily.

My Dad decided that the lure of California was stronger than the family ties to Texas and we came to California to seek the good times. After a year of moving up and down the state picking fruit we landed in Corcoran in time for the kids to enroll in school in September of 1940. Dad got a job with Gilkey Farms and we moved into the farm labor camp on Dairy Ave. Mother made friends with other families there that lasted for more than 50 years.

In September of 1943 I joined my classmates in the kindergarten class and have been a proud member of that group for all of my days since. I made my way through Corcoran schools and entered the Univ of Calif at Berkeley in 1956. After college, I spent 5 years in the professional football AFL where I made good friends but very little money. I was able to walk when I finished playing so that is a blessing today. Some of my teammates cannot climb up stairs ..

I was married to Esther Sitton class of 57 for 19 years and we had four children who have given us 11 grandchildren. We divorced in 1977. I became a teacher and coach in 1967 and spent 32 years in public education mostly in Fremont Calif. I became a high school principal specializing in alternative education programs. During my 18 years as principal I was involved in many state programs that helped improve the educational system for students who had different learning styles.

In Fremont, in 1979, I met Pat Borer, who won my heart completely and we were married in 1980. Pat was a teacher who also became an administrator so we shared many years in the same field. We have been married now for 25 years. Travel has been our main focus and we have been to China, Mexico, Greece, Europe, Alaska, New Zealand. There are still many roads to travel together and with good health we will seek them out. We live at Donner Lake Ca in the summer and fall and the winter months in Palm Desert Ca. I try to play golf but there has been no carry over of athletic skills so I am a real duffer at that sport. Life has been good to me and I am thankful everyday for what I have been given.
  Pat Crow passed away 2/23/06.
