Born on April 17,1938 in Hanford, California to parents escaping the Dust Bowl of the Mid-west.  The first several years the family lived in Alpaugh, California and then moved to Corcoran in 1941 where my father was employed by Elmer Von Glahn in the production of cotton for the war effort.

I entered school in Corcoran in 1944, but moved after 8th grade graduation to Chico, Calif. in 1952 where I finished high school in 1956 and entered Chico State College.  I entered the US Army in 1959 for 2 years and returned to finish college.  I became a Medical Technologist in Sutter Hospitals in Sacramento when I met my future wife, Marilyn, a medical technology student at the county hospital.  We were married in Massachusetts in 1966 and returned to live in Sacramento, Cal..
In 1967, I entered the Univ. of North Dakota as a graduate student and completed an MS and in 1973 a PhD in physiology. During that time a son, Erik and a daughter, Dana were born .  Following a 2 year post doctorate at Duke Medical Center I was employed as a toxicologist by the US EPA in Washington. D.C..  Following a 15 year employment by the EPA, Marilyn then an accomplished microbiologist, felt the need to enter the ministry for the United Methodist Church. She has 2 congregations near Charlottesville, Va. assigned to her.
After a daily 24 mile commute up I 95 from Woodbridge, Va.. for 24 years, a retirement bug bit, and I was so wounded so that I retired in 2000 from the Federal Service.
Presently, I mow grass and maintain 3 different homes. (a family home, a daughters home, and the wife's parsonage).  Marilyn and I have 2 grand children, a girl aged 6 and a boy aged 5.  Visitation and carrying on is accomplished as often as possible since the grand children live 75 miles distant.  Grand mothers and fathers are noted to dote over their children and such is the case for the Spencer household.
Future plans include the retirement from the ministry by Marilyn in 2006 and travel for the retired couple (and more doting over the grand children)
